Product Review: Field Notes
Jan 14th, 2009 by Jyll
For the past several months, I’ve read a lot of posts about Field Notes over on Fountain Pen Network. Curiosity got the best of me and I had to order some for myself.
I ordered “The Kit” which consisted of 6 notebooks, 6 ballpoint pens, 6 pencils and a 2009 calendar. The whole package reminded of some of the goodies I used to find in Grandma’s attic!
The notebooks are printed and assembled in the US! The notebooks measure 3-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ and contain 48 pages that are staple-saddle-stiched. The paper is off-white with 5mm light orange grids. The paper quality is extremely high – some bleedthrough with wet writing fountain pens.
The ballpoint pens are black with white Field Notes name embossed on the barrel. It’s been quite a while since I used such a pen! The pencils are #2 woodgrain pencils made out of cedar with an environmentally friendly eraser.
I gave one set (notebook, pen, pencil) to a colleague and it’s cool to see her go from meeting to meeting with Field Notes in hand! I’m currently using one notebook as a food diary – the grids make it easy!
The notebooks are priced a bit higher ($9.95 for 3) than Moleskine Cahier ($7.95 for 3), but I think Field Notes have a higher quality of paper. Check out Field Notes for a reliable pocket notebook!
